In 1990, he co-authored The Illustrated Discography of Hot-Rod Music, 1961-1965 with Stephen McParland.
As a guitarist, Blair formed the surf instrumental band Jon & The Nightriders in 1979. Following their first album release, Surf Beat ’80, the band was quickly propelled into the local L.A. nightclub scene. They completed a successful
European tour amid a great deal of media exposure, which helped spark a resurgence of popular interest in the genre both in the U.S. and in Europe.
